It was a hard-fought battle by Conservative MPs in West Sussex to get improvements to the A27 back on the National Roads Plan for the first time since the 1990's.
It is imperative that we rally round a solution that most of the local community can support to avoid the fate that befell the schemes in the 1990's that were dropped due to lack of local consensus.
That is why Peter Bottomley and I set up the A27 Working Group chaired by Tom Wye to include all political parties, local businesses and residents groups to scrutinise the proposals as they emerge from Highways England's detailed work.
We are already pressing the Transport Secretary to make sure that additional funds are made available if effective solutions come in above the current indicative budget as is likely. This is the most important infrastructure problem facing this area and we cannot let it drag on any longer.
