Today's podcast is about environmental protections and animal welfare, two issues I know are important to the residents of East Worthing and Shoreham.
I know a lot of people are concerned about what happens to our environmental regulations when we leave the EU. Well quite simply the existing EU laws will be carried over into UK law, whilst the UK's Climate Change Act is amongst some of the best legislation around to encourage more renewable energy, such as the Rampion wind farm. This is an issue I am particularly interested in given that I set up the E.Y.E. Project - Eco, Young and Engaged - 10 years ago in order to teach our kids about how we can protect the environment; I am happy to say that scores of schools take part each year in the EYE Project at our annual Eco Summits.
On animal welfare, I was pleased to see in the Conservatives' manifesto a commitment to introduce CCTV into slaughterhouses to ensure that our high animal welfare standards are upheld and if they are not then there will be serious sanctions and punishments against the perpetrators. I was also pleased to see in the manifesto a commitment to clamping down on live animal exports once we leave the EU.
