I was happy to support Stephen Kerr MP's Ten Minute Rule Bill on the subject of nuisance phone calls in the House recently.
The Bill seeks to do three things:
- Increase the penalties for individuals and companies that are found to be involved in this kind of activity
- Tighten up the definition of what a nuisance phone call is
- Introduce a duty on those who buy and sell phone number data to check whether phone numbers are registered with Telephone Preference System (TPS)
This will highlight the issue and draw attention to the fraudulent nature of many of these calls which can harm vulnerable people and the productivity problems that arise in business from these kind of nuisance calls.
