In Parliament on Tuesday I was the first backbencher called to speak in response to the Government's new Illegal Migration Bill, which the Home Secretary has just introduced in the House of Commons.
Stopping the boats was one of Rishi Sunak's five pledges made at the start of the year. We absolutely must stop people crossing the Channel in small, unsafe boats so I support this Bill which will deter people from making this perilous and illegal journey.
I am particularly pleased that the Government has listened to my calls for sustainable safe and legal routes for genuine asylum seekers, but we must crack down on those seeking to game the system.
