I asked Hilary Benn MP - architect of the Bill to extend our membership of the EU to January 31st or to an alternative date of the EU’s choosing - why he believes this Bill would possibly make the EU offer more generous terms for a Brexit deal - one that he could back. Sadly I couldn’t detect an answer.
MPs backing this Bill should be honest - they don’t want to prevent no-deal Brexit, they want to prevent Brexit entirely and, through a future revocation of Article 50 or a ‘second referendum’, cancel the vote in 2016. This would not only ignore the votes of the 17.4 million who voted to leave, but the 16.1 million who voted to remain - all 33.5 million voters who voted in the knowledge that this was a ‘once in a generation decision’.
