I had a very useful meeting with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home discussing what the Conservatives are doing in government to increase sentencing for animal cruelty.
Currently, in addition to the maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine, the courts can also disqualify offenders from keeping animals for as long as they consider appropriate. I am delighted that the Government has listened to organisations like Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and will bring forward legislation to increase punishments for the most horrific acts of animal cruelty to five years.
