I attended a well-supported inaugural public meeting of new environmental group AREA at Ropetackle last week set up to monitor air pollution in local traffic hotspots and lobby for cleaner air.
There were presentations from Friends of the Earth experts and representatives of the Shoreham Society who have backed the project along with Shoreham Beach Residents Association. It was also good to see a good turnout of local councillors including new county councillors Dave Simmons and Kevin Boram and Adur Council officers who also spoke.
The group have installed a number of pollution monitors around town and released the readings show some hotspots around Shoreham High Street for example where pollution levels are too close to recommended limits. This mirrors findings from the A27 Working Group where monitoring showed that air pollution levels can double where traffic flow is impeded at notorious spots like the Grove Lodge roundabout in Worthing, when the traffic lights are working!
Adur Council will follow through on action following on from the Government’s recently announced Air Quality Action plan which you can find here. https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/improving-air-quality-reducing-nitrogen-dioxide-in-our-towns-and-cities
